On the outskirts of the slums around Lincoln Park, Michigan chaos reigns. Most legal businesses have long since left, but for one business, life is good.  An unknown local business offers a new you, at a cost. They focus on self esteem, particularly in women and offer a full spectrum of social and business skills necessary to succeed in today’s corporate America.

They believe that the end justifies the means, and when one signs up, the individual forfeits their rights, going down a rabbit hole of physical and psychological rebirth. One exits the program mentally and physically fit to do battle, fully qualified to perform to the constraints of the toughest of business models.

Esteem can be a powerful weapon, a two edged sword wielding as much power verbally as it could physically. What would you do if you grew up being told that the sky was green and that the grass was blue?

  1. Santa’s dead! Dote on yourself, treat yourself to something you normally would not do. Empower yourself; who’s going to take care of you if you don’t do it yourself.

    Rely on yourself.

  2. “Any questions before we get started”, Sharon asked herself as she opened the glass door and went inside. She took the first left and then approached the woman who was sitting at the opposite end of the table. She introduced herself and shook her hand before returning to the chair that was obviously meant for her. Amanda stood up and began walking in circles around the room. “I hope you don’t mind if I walk around. I sit most days during my job; so much so that I have to get my exercise when I can” she said to her. Sharon examined the table and watched the woman as she circled the room. “A test lies in front of you, possibly hindering or preventing you from achieving success”, Amanda said as the woman listened on. “A brownie, a cookie and a glass of water stand from left to right in front of you. Behind them are another cookie and a shot of alcohol”, she told her candidate. Sharon looked at the placement of the items, and thought of their purpose…

  3. As I finish typing the last few pages I feel great relief and know that this project that I have worked on for over a year on weekends, on camping trips, before and after work, has panned out. I can’t wait to share it with you all.

  4. OK, I’m finally finished typing it all into the computer. It’s a wonderful feeling that most of my work is done but now I need an editor and possibly an agent – will this ever end?

  5. Editing pages 197and on today, with a full weekend ahead of me. I’ll progress as far as I can and think that my interruptions would include football and candy crazed kiddos!

OMG!! You have got to be kidding me! There has to be a second book or something to explain all this. This does, however, explain why the story bounced back and forth.

  9. About the author

The author has written several short stories and poems throughout the years. Some of these sparked larger projects which involved complicated characters and situations. The first novel was born on a camping trip that was rained out from all outside activities for three days straight.

Thriving on the darkness that is inside us all, the author tends to focus exclusively on psychological horror. Painting a subtle mixture of what the mind sees and thinks whether or not it can get away with it. Sometimes it isn’t what has been recently described; it’s what is missing that disturbs you.

Enjoy the roller coaster ride that ends abruptly, cars careening down a track that has a crack large enough to throw the coaster onto the loading platform or off the edge. Which path would you choose if you knew there was a crack, would you still go along for the ride?

  10. As Bereft Reality makes it’s way through the editor, the sequel is being outlined.

Prepare to be shocked even further from reality with this one!

  11. First Reviews are in!!!

Reviews for BEREFT REALITY by James Summers

    1. “Bereft Reality” is the first book I’ve read from this talented author James Summers, but I hope it’s not the last! The way this book was written is different from many I’ve read before, but it totally hooked me right from the beginning and kept my attention throughout. It was erotic, intelligent, weird, sad, dark, funny, deep, tragic… I thought the storyline and the character development to be very original and well-thought out, and I liked that it wasn’t just “about sex” but had complex interweaving storylines to keep me invested. There were some pretty shocking (taboo) events that may upset some readers but I thought the author handled the sensitive subject matter well. This book will haunt me for a long time, but in a good way. A powerful, mind-bending read that kept me captivated. Liked the characters and the ending was satisfactory. Definitely for Adults only. (5 stars)

    2. Well “Bereft Reality” certainly took me a while to read, but in the end I’d say it was absolutely worth it! I like how everything came together (even if the end is a tad frustrating), and I enjoyed reading this unusual, sexxxy book! I think James Summers writes very well… very descriptive and strong and we feel like we are there almost like watching an erotic David Lynch movie or something. There were some slow parts that did little to advance the forward progression of the plot, and some minor editing things here and there (punctuation- not grammar or content), and at times the pacing did feel a bit ‘repetitive’ of certain subjects. But I enjoyed the dynamics between the women and liked the chemistry and storylines. Overall an interesting, if not surreal novel that pushes the boundaries of typical literature. Warning – recommended for mature readers only as has graphic subject matter. (4 stars)

    3. This novel was quite a change of pace for me, as I normally gravitate towards more fantasy/paranormal romance, but this was one engaging and HOT tale that I couldn’t put down! I did have to have some patience in the beginning until I felt that I was more caught up in the thrust of the story, but the author does a great job of explaining all the characters and their stories. I don’t rehash books (That is what the book description is for), but I enjoyed the easy flow and dark drama and original plot of “Bereft Reality”, and really liked the characters, especially Summer, Amanda, Sue. Happy that they were not cliché, cardboard cutouts but relatable and real… even when being a bit disturbing. I liked that I never quite knew where the story was going, and it was anything but predictable… my eyebrows shot up and my jaw dropped many times. It gets pretty “intense”, and I wasn’t prepared for where the book went, but it was an entertaining ‘ride’ that I won’t soon forget. The author has a great way of writing, very natural and easy to get lost in. Would read more from Mr. Summers in the future. Recommend for adults only. (4 stars)

    4. This novel “Bereft Reality” reads like a steamy, X-rated soap opera! And I mean that in a good way :-). So much drama and what an emotional roller coaster! So many crazy things happen I feel like this could be a movie. Although there were some parts that I thought weren’t really necessary and slowed down the pace some, overall it was well done and was a lot hotter than I expected it to be. There is much more to this story than just some sex and violence, although that does play a pretty central role, but one with complex plotlines that will keep you hooked through the end. A powerful, memorable read. This is first novel I’ve read by James Summers, and to be honest I really wasn’t sure it would be my thing, but I really liked it. He has a gift for writing descriptive and life-like scenes that make us feel like we are really there inside the story, in the character’s heads (for better or worse…). I like that this book didn’t feel stale or derivative, but instead like a new niche of psychological suspense that serves well to help diversify a somewhat cookie-cutter erotica genre (in my opinion). I did notice some minor editing mistakes that could be handled with a good proofreader, but overall the entire novel was one that I thought was well-executed and delivered an emotional, if not slightly disturbing win in the end. Ages 18+. (4-5 stars)

    Honest reviews!

  12. Brandy trusts me with her nightmares – so should you!

What I liked about the novel Bereft Reality, by James Summers: The way Summer flipped the script and her revenge and everyone’s need for power and control. But I have to be honest about one thing…halfway through the book I almost felt desensitized to what was going on. I loved the ending because I never saw it coming. And I have decided I need a jake… – Brandy M.
