Clarify
Before You Contact James H. Summers
Monsters look like us. Some of us answer email.
So, You Found Me.
Hello, and thank you for reaching out about my books.
I appreciate your interest, and I’d like to hear more
about what brought you to my work.
Before we discuss a proposal, let’s have a clear starting
point: which book interests you, what you understand
about it, and what you have in mind.
Have you explored
www.peggylanders.com?
Have you reviewed this
Clarify page?
You’re here now. That’s a promising start.
If you’re approaching me about interviews, representation,
collaboration, production, or film and television
adaptation, please take a little time with the work
before we talk business.
Three Reasons Not to Explore My Website
-
You’re sleeping too well.
Give your mind something to do at 3 a.m. -
You trust the people around you.
My books could make the next family gathering awkward. -
You have plans tomorrow.
“One more chapter” has very little respect for your schedule.
Still here? Good. Now for the serious part.
The Books Come First
My published books include Bereft Reality,
Picking Murphys, First Responder,
Site 123, and They Heinous.
My developing work includes Second Chances,
Hemoglobin Insecure, and further expansions.
Published Books

You can explore the titles through my
Books page.
Find the one that interests you, and spend some time
getting to know it.
A Title Is Only the Beginning
I receive messages from people claiming to admire my books
who describe stories I haven’t written. That makes it
difficult to have a useful conversation.
Describing Bereft Reality as only a story about
self-esteem misses much of what is happening.
Likewise, First Responder is not a hospital,
emergency-room, ambulance, or medical-professional story.
Its title refers to the first one to show—the first
presence, the first arrival, and the consequences that follow.
Tell me what you found in the story. A specific observation
gives us much more to discuss than a paragraph of praise
that could belong to any author.
Have You Heard From the Author?
Have you explored my
YouTube author channel,
including the chapter readings, video series, and author interviews?
Spend some time with the voice behind the books.
Here are the book playlists linked on my website.
Look Behind the Book Cover
For the title you want to discuss, have you reviewed its
“Why This Book” and behind-the-book material?
Have you explored the
artwork pages?
If you are comfortable having the story revealed, have
you visited the
spoiler pages?
They are called spoilers for a reason. Consider that
your friendly warning before opening the door.
These materials can give us more to talk about.
Please distinguish between what you’ve read in a book
and what you’ve learned through my website or videos.
Tell Me What Brought You Here
Please explain briefly, in your own words, what the book
you’re asking about is actually about.
- Which book interests you?
- What character, scene, relationship, or idea caught your attention?
- What stayed with you, and why?
- What have you actually read or watched so far?
- What would you like to discuss with me?
It is perfectly fine to be at the beginning.
Just tell me where you are.
You don’t need to pretend you’ve read everything.
An honest starting point makes for a better conversation.
If You’re Bringing a Professional Proposal
My goal is to move my work forward through serious
representation, meaningful exposure, and opportunities
in television, streaming, and film.
I want to hear from people who can explain a real
opportunity and why a particular book belongs in it.
Please include:
-
Who you are:
your name, role, and the company or organization you represent. -
What you’re proposing:
the specific book and the opportunity you see for it. -
Your relevant experience:
projects, credits, or professional links I can review. -
What you expect from me:
materials, time, participation, or other commitments. -
Any fees or costs:
put those on the table at the outset. -
The next step:
what you believe we could actually do from here.
My time and my work matter to me. I’m open to a serious
conversation with someone who has taken the time to
understand what I’m writing and can explain where they
see an opportunity.
First Responder: Beyond the Books

The First Responder world includes two full prestige
series bibles: one for First Responder and one
for Second Chances, the second book in the series.
There is already substantial work behind these stories:
adaptation material, continuity development, character
arcs, and franchise planning.
If you’re contacting me about screen adaptation,
tell me what interests you about this world and how
you could help it reach the right people.
I am looking for someone who can help move the work forward.
Professional Inquiries: Start Here
Please send your inquiry to
darkfictionauth@gmail.com
and follow the requirements below.
Use this subject format:
I BELIEVE – [Book Title]
Example: I BELIEVE – First Responder
Write in your own words. Please don’t send an AI-generated
summary, copied praise, or a template that could be sent
to any author by changing the name.
Be specific. Tell me what you found in my work and why
you want to be part of its next step.
The Photograph
For a professional inquiry, please include a clear
photograph of yourself with the book you want to discuss.
A physical copy is fine. So is the ebook displayed
on your phone, tablet, Kindle, or another reader.
No elaborate production required.
You and the book will do.
The 300 Words
Include at least 300 words explaining your specific
interest in the book and your proposal.
Your brief explanation of the story can be part of
that response. Mention characters, scenes, themes,
atmosphere, or adaptation possibilities that show
familiarity with the work.
Give me something we can build a conversation around.
About That Dinner Invitation
I have a slightly off-color way of explaining this:
“If you’re going to screw me, at least take me out
to dinner first.”
Please take that in the spirit intended—a little humor
from an author who receives quite a few promises and proposals.
If we’re considering doing business together, I’d welcome
the chance to sit down over dinner in Floyds Knobs, Indiana,
and hear about you, your company, and what you have in mind.
Tell me what interests you about my work, what you bring
to the table, and what you would want from me in return.
Travel isn’t always practical, and dinner is an invitation,
not a requirement. A straightforward conversation is
what I’m after.
Then Let’s Talk
Once you’ve explored the work and explained your interest,
we can have a more useful conversation about what comes next.
I welcome thoughtful inquiries about interviews,
representation, adaptation, and meaningful collaboration.
Help me understand why you’re reaching out to me
about this particular work.
Thank you again. I look forward to hearing what brought
you to my books.
